Coloriages Mystères are color-by-number books that turn every page into a hidden-image puzzle. Fill in the numbered zones and watch a Disney scene slowly emerge — Mickey, Elsa, Stitch, the Princesses, and more. No artistic talent needed. Just numbers, colors, and the joy of the reveal.

Disney Coloriages Mystères: A Beginner's Guide to the Hidden Magic

What Are Coloriages Mystères?

Coloriages Mystères — French for "mystery colorings" — are color-by-number books published by Hachette Heroes that turn every page into a hidden-image puzzle. Open a book and you'll see a dense grid of small numbered shapes: no image in sight, just numbers waiting to be brought to life. As you fill each zone with its matching color, a Disney scene slowly emerges from the page — Mickey, Elsa, Stitch, the Princesses, and dozens of other beloved characters across the series.

Since the first volume launched in France, Coloriages Mystères have grown into one of the world's most loved adult coloring formats, with millions of copies sold and dedicated communities sharing their finished pages online. It's not just coloring — it's discovering.

How It Works

Each page has two components: a color key (usually listing 8–20 colors mapped to numbers) and a grid of numbered zones — each one waiting for its matching color. You look up the number in the key, pick up the right marker, and fill in the zone. Step by step, number by number, the image appears.

Important: The numbers in the book are not connected to the numbers on your markers. The numbering is unique to each page — and even within the same book, the same number can represent a completely different color on a different page. Always follow the color key on each individual page. Never assume number 5 is always the same color.

Who Are These Books For?

Coloriages Mystères are designed for adults and older children. Because the zones can be small and the color keys require careful reading, we generally recommend them for ages 9 and up. Younger children with strong coloring skills and the ability to read numbers and letters can certainly enjoy them too — but patience and focus are essential.

You don't need any artistic talent or coloring experience. The book guides you entirely. If you can read numbers, you can do this.

Difficulty Levels

There is no official difficulty rating from Hachette Heroes themselves — the levels you'll find online are community-driven, not publisher designations. At Coloring Family, we've developed our own five-tier system based on direct experience with the books and feedback from our customers.

Difficulty levels

LevelBest forWhat to expect
DoodleAbsolute beginnersWide zones, few colors, relaxed and forgiving
IllustrationThose ready for a little moreMore detail, still very accessible
ArtworkColorers with some experienceGreat balance of challenge and enjoyment
Fine ArtConfident colorersFine zones, large palette, requires steady hands
MasterpieceExperienced enthusiastsVery fine zones, complex palette, a true artistic challenge

The key variable across all levels is zone size and density — not the subject matter. A Disney Princesses book can sit at Fine Art level if the grid is dense enough, while a Mickey book in standard format might be a comfortable Doodle. Our catalog includes a difficulty rating for every title.

Our advice for first-timers: always start one level lower than you think you need. It's far better to finish a book with a sense of accomplishment than to stall halfway through something harder than expected. You can always move up.

What to Color With

This is where most beginners get it wrong — and it matters more than you'd think.

Acrylic Markers: The Right Tool for the Job

Acrylic markers are the tool of choice for Coloriages Mystères — not colored pencils, not watercolors, not crayons.

  • They fully cover the printed numbers after one or two layers — the final image looks clean and professional
  • They don't bleed through to the back page — critical, because most books are printed on both sides
  • They deliver rich, opaque, vibrant color that closely matches the finished image on the cover
  • They're buildable — make a mistake? Simply paint over it with a new layer

Colored pencils and watercolors are too translucent to cover the numbers. They won't give you the bold, printed-quality result that makes these books so satisfying to complete.

Brush Tip, Fine Tip & Gel Pens

  • 🖌️ Brush Tip — The foundation. Smooth, even coverage for all zone sizes. Use it for 90% of your work.
  • ✏️ Fine Tip — For zones too small for a brush. Feels precise — but can't replace the brush on larger areas.
  • 💎 Gel Pens — For outlining and fine detailing only. Essential for Fine Art & Masterpiece levels.

Brush tip is the foundation. The fear of using a brush in tight areas is completely normal at first — it disappears with practice. Learning to control a brush tip is the single most valuable skill you'll develop as a color-by-number enthusiast.

The ideal toolkit by level:

You don't need to buy everything upfront. Start with a good brush tip set and build from there.

Getting the Best Results

Layer Your Colors

This is the most important technique for beautiful results: never stop at a single coat.

Apply a first layer, let it dry for a minute or two, then apply a second layer on top. The difference in depth, vibrancy, and coverage is dramatic. Light colors — pale yellows, pinks, whites — need more layers than dark ones to fully cover the numbers. Don't get discouraged if a light color looks patchy after the first coat. Keep layering and it will come together.

Protect Your Work

Most books are printed on both sides of each page. Once you've completed an illustration, spray a coat of varnish over it before closing the book or removing the page. This prevents color transfer to the facing page and protects the artwork from peeling over time. Varnish comes in glossy and matte finishes — choose whichever suits your style.

Framing Your Finished Pages

Completed pages make beautiful framed artwork. Because pages are double-sided, you'll choose one of the two illustrations to display. With a coat of varnish applied, the colors stay vibrant and the artwork holds up for years. Many of our customers frame their finished pages as gifts — and they genuinely look like printed art.

How Long Does It Take?

A single page in a Doodle level book might take one to two hours. A Masterpiece page can easily take three hours or more. A complete book could take weeks or months.

"This is a marathon, not a race — and the marathon is the point."

The entire purpose of Coloriages Mystères is to give yourself uninterrupted quiet time — to focus on something creative, step away from screens, and let your mind decompress. The finished artwork is the reward, but the process itself is where the real value lives. Many of our customers set aside 30–60 minutes each evening and find it's the most restful part of their day.

A Note on Book Sizes

  • A4 (Standard) — The most common format. Comfortable for everyday home use at any level.
  • A3 (New edition) — Larger surface, easier to see fine details. Great for a more immersive experience.
  • Carré (Square) — Smaller, fewer pages. Perfect for a first try, a gift, or coloring on the go.

Where to Start

Pick a Disney theme you love, choose a Doodle or Illustration level title, grab a set of brush tip acrylic markers, and begin. Don't overthink the color matching — do your best with what you have and enjoy the process of watching the image appear.

Every book you complete makes the next one easier, more confident, and more beautiful.
